Videos from Prize Awards

The Prize Award Ceremonies and Banquets take place in Stockholm (for the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel) and in Oslo (for the Nobel Peace Prize) on December 10 every year, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

Award Ceremony The Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm 1934

The 1934 Nobel Prizes were awarded at the Stockholm Concert Hall to four Americans and one Italian. The Prize Winners arrived at the Concert Hall on December 10, 1934. The Royal family entered the hall: Sweden's King Gustaf V, Prince Gustaf Adolf, Princess Sibylla, Princess Ingeborg, Prince Carl, Prince Eugen and Prince Wilhelm. The Prize Winners then entered the scene. The Prizes were distributed, for Chemistry to Harold Urey (received by Mr. Steinhardt, Minister of the United States, as the Laureate was absent) for Physiology or Medicine to George Minot, William Murphy and George Whipple, and for Literature to Luigi Pirandello.

Only two Laureates were present when the 1938 Nobel Prizes were awarded at the Stockholm Concert Hall, December 10, 1938: Pearl Buck and Enrico Fermi. Swedish King Gustav V presented the Laureates with their diplomas and medals, for Physics to Enrico Fermi and for Literature to Pearl Buck.

George Marshall The Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony in Oslo 1953

George Marshall received his Nobel Peace Prize for 1953 in the Auditorium of the University of Oslo on December 10, 1953, from Mr. Jahn, chairman of the Nobel Committee, in the presence of Norway's King Haakon VII. Communists protested from the gallery by shouting and throwing leaflets. General Marshall made his acceptance speech.

In the afternoon of December 10, 1953 it was dark and rainy. But in the Stockholm Concert Hall the lights glittered on the festively dressed audience. The Royal family was there: Sweden's King Gustaf VI Adolf, Queen Louise, Princesses Sibylla and Margareta and Prince Bertil. The Prize Winners entered the scene. After that Birger Ekeberg delivered his presentation speech. Professor Erik Hultén presented the Physics Prize Winner, Fritz Zernike, Professor Arne Fredga for the Chemistry Prize Winner Herman Staudinger, Professor Einar Hammarsten for the Winners of the Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Hans Krebs and Fritz Lipmann, and author Sigfrid Siwertz spoke for the absent Prize Winner in Literature, Sir Winston Churchill. Lady Clementine Churchill received the Prize on behalf of her husband.

Some of the Prize Winners arrive at the Stockholm Concert Hall on December 10, 1955: Pär Lagerkvist (Prize Winner in Literature 1951), Polykarp Kusch, Hugo Theorell, Halldór Laxness, and also some members of Swedish royalty. Inside the festively decorated hall the public waits for the Royal family to arrive: King Gustaf VI Adolf and Queen Louise, Princesses Sibylla, Margaretha and Birgitta, and Princes Wilhelm and Bertil. The ceremony begins and Willis E. Lamb and Polykarp Kusch receive their Physics Prizes, Vincent du Vigneaud receives the Chemistry Prize, Hugo Theorell the Prize in Physiology or Medicine and Halldór Laxness receives the Prize for Literature.

Prize Award Ceremony The Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm 1962

The 1962 Nobel Prizes were delivered on December 10, in a glittering ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall, to four British scientists, an American professor and an American novelist. The 80-year old Swedish King Gustaf VI Adolf presented each man with his medal and diploma: for Chemistry to Max F. Perutz and John C. Kendrew, for Physiology or Medicine to Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins, and for Literature to John Steinbeck.
