Wislawa Szymborska naquit le 2 juillet 1923 dans l’ouest de la Pologne, dans la petite ville de Bnin (aujourd’hui un quartier de Kórnik), près de Poznan. Depuis 1931, elle habite à Cracovie, où elle étudia la littérature polonaise et la sociologie à l’université Jagellon, de 1945 à 1948. Elle fit ses débuts poétiques en mars 1945 dans le supplément hebdomadaire du quotidien Dziennik Polski avec le poème “Szukam slowa” (“Je cherche le mot”), et dans l’immédiate après-guerre, elle continua à publier des poèmes dans divers journaux et revues. De 1953 à 1981, elle travailla à la rédaction de la revue hebdomadaire Zycie Literackie (La vie littéraire) où, sous la rubrique “Lecture non-obligatoire”, elle fit la critique d’ouvrages touchant aux domaines les plus divers : depuis le tourisme, la cuisine, le jardinage et la sorcellerie jusqu’à l’histoire de l’art, aux poèmes de T.S. Eliot sur des chats et aux poèmes absurdes d’Edward Lear. Mme Szymborska a aussi traduit des poèmes, surtout la poésie baroque française et Agrippa d’Aubigné. Dans les années 80, sous le pseudonyme de Stanczykówna, elle a collaboré à la publication polonaise “samizdat” Arka et à Kultura, une revue en exil publiée à Paris. Sa poésie est accessible dans un grand nombre de langues européennes, ainsi qu’en arabe, hébreu, japonais et chinois.
