The Nobel Assembly at
Karolinska Institutet has awarded the Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine jointly to Paul
Lauterbur and Peter
Mansfield for their discoveries concerning
"magnetic resonance imaging". These discoveries made
it possible to develop modern magnetic resonance
imaging, MRI, which represents a breakthrough in
medical diagnostics and research. Worldwide, more
than 60 million investigations with MRI are performed
each year.
