Aarvik was Secretary at the Norwegian Home Mission Society
1934-1937, and worked for the Society's local branch in the City
of Stavanger in 1940-1946. He was a journalist in
Dagsavisa, a daily in the City of Trondheim in 1947-1950,
and subsequently became editor of that paper until 1954.

Aarvik was also editor of Folkets Framtid, the organ of
the Christian People's Party in 1948-1965. He was a member of the
Storting in 1961-1965 and in 1969-1977, was president of the
Lagting in 1972-1973. From 1965 until 1971, he was Minister of
Social Affairs in the non-socialist coalition government.
Egil Aarvik was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in
1975-1990, serving as committee chairman in1982-1990.
