Dr Albert Schweitzer celebrated his 85th birthday on 14 January 1960 at Lambaréné in the heart of equatorial Africa. Lambaréné, a hospital and medical mission, was founded and built in 1913 by Dr Schweitzer and his wife Helene. Primarily a leper colony, the hospital soon became a haven for Africans suffering from all types of diseases and injury. |
