Born 27 August 1915 in Washington, D.C.; Ph.D., Columbia University 1940; since 1947 employed at Harvard University, from 1966 as Higgins Professor of Physics. Executive Secretary of the group that established the Brookhaven National Laboratory and first Chairman of its physics division; Chairman of Universities Research Association, which planned the Fermi Laboratory, Batavia, Illinois 1966-1972; President of the American Physical Society 1978-1979. American citizen.
