The Nobel Stamps of 1963

 

On December 10, 1963, the Swedish Post Office issued two new jubilee stamps to commemorate the following persons awarded the Nobel Prize in 1903:

SVANTE ARRHENIUS (1859–1927), Stockholm University, "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation." (Chemistry)

NIELS FINSEN (1860–1904), Danish physician, in recognition of his contribution to the treatment of diseases, especially lupus vulgaris, with concentrated light radiation, whereby he has opened a new avenue for medical science." (Physiology or Medicine)

BJØRNSTJERNE BJØRNSON (1832–1910), Norway, "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile work as a poet, which has always been distinguished both for the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit." (Literature)

ANTOINE HENRI BECQUEREL (1852–1908), was awarded one half of the Nobel Prize in Physics, "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by his discovery of spontaneus radioactivity."
The other half was awarded jointly to PIERRE CURIE (1859–1906), and his wife MARIE CURIE (1867–1934), "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel." (Physics)
