The Nobel Stamps of 1985

 The stamps were engraved by Martin Mörck after originals by Gunnar Brusewitz, who also designed the illustration on the First Day Cover: the symbol of poetry, the mythological winged horse Pegasus. The stamps are printed by combined recess/offset at the PFA.

 

The stamps portray Nobel Laureates in Literature:

WILLIAM FAULKNER (1897-1962), USA, Nobel Laureate 1949: "for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel."

HALLDÓR LAXNESS (1902-1998), Iceland, Nobel Laureate 1955: "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland."

MIGUEL ASTURIAS (1899-1974), Guatemala, Nobel Laureate 1967: "for his vivid literary achievement deeply-rooted in the national traits and traditions of the Indian peoples of Latin America."

YASUNARI KAWABATA (1899-1972), Japan, Nobel Laureate 1968: "for his narrative mastery, which with great sensibility expresses the essence of the Japanese mind."

PATRICK WHITE (1912-1990), Australia, Nobel Laureate 1973: "for an epic and psychological narrative art which has introduced a new continent into literature."
