The Nobel Stamps of 1987

The stamps were engraved by Martin Mörck after originals by Gabor Palotai, who also designed the illustration on the First Day Cover. The stamps are printed in recess by the PFA. The FDC postmark design is the work of Arne Johnson.

Nobel Laureates - Astrophysics

Astrophysics is that branch of astronomy dealing with the physical nature of heavenly bodies. A neutron star's magnetic field creates radiation-emitting particles which we receive as pulses.

ANTONY HEWISH (1974) discovered the first pulsar.

S. CHANDRASEKHAR (1983) has developed the theory accounting for the phenomenon of white dwarf stars.

WILLIAM FOWLER (1983) has studied the origin of the elements in the universe. The stamp motif illustrates the structure of heavy atomic nuclei.

In the beginning, the universe consisted of hot radiant gas. ARNO PENZIAS and ROBERT WILSON (1978) discovered this cosmic background radiation.

MARTIN RYLE (1974) developed a technique in which several telescopes are used to achieve the same results as a single gigantic telescope.
