| The stamps are a joint issue with Switzerland and were drawn by Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd and engraved by Czeslaw Slania. They were printed by combination print at Sweden Post Stamps. FDC illustration and cancellation: Olof Baldursdottir. |
The stamps portray Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Paul Karrer and Alfred Nobel:
The Swiss chemist PAUL KARRER (1889–1971) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1937. He worked on isolating and determining the structure of carbohydrates and vitamins and was the first to describe the structure of a vitamin. He also demonstrated that carotenoids are transformed into vitamin A in the body.
With his invention of dynamite ALFRED NOBEL (1833–1896) created a safer way of transporting the explosive nitroglycerine. This was very important for building the St. Gotthard and Simplon tunnels in Switzerland at the end of the 19th century.
