The Nobel Stamps of 2003

This year, a joint Sweden-Spain issue commemorates two Spanish Nobel Laureates in Medicine. Hannu Järviö created the original drawing for both countries' stamps, featuring portraits of the Nobel Laureates along with illustrative interpretations of their discoveries. The stamps were engraved by Czeslaw Slania and printed by combination print at Sweden Post Stamps.

The stamps portray Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine:

SANTIAGO RAMÓN Y CAJAL
Histology is the study of the fine structure of tissues. Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852–1943) was one of the foremost scientists in this field. He was professor of histology and pathology at the Universities of Barcelona and Madrid. He was an early laureate. He got the prize for medicine in 1906 together with the Italian CAMILLO GOLGI "as a recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system."

SEVERO OCHOA
Severo Ochoa (1905–1993), physician and biochemist, was a later Spanish Laureate for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. From 1940 he was professor of pharmacology and biochemistry in the USA. He shared the 1959 medicine prize with the American ARTHUR KORNBERG "for their discovery of the mechanism of the biological synthesis of ribonucleic and deoxyribonucleic acids."

The first-day cover was designed by Hannu Järviö and refers to the research of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. The cancellation shows the symbol of medicine.
