POSCO was established on April 1, 1968 to develop the steel industry in Korea. Since the company started operating its first steelworks in 1973, it has continued to expand its steelworks, finally equipping itself with an additional ultra modern steelworks that directly connects ironmaking, steelmaking, and rolling in 1992. The company also forged and established firm connections between industries, academics, and research with the founding of Pohang University of Science and Technology and the R&D Center for Industrial Science and Technology, in addition to an institute solely devoted to the development of its independent technologies.
