Gösta Ekspong was born in 1922. He is Professor Emeritus in Physics at Stockholm University, Sweden. He set up a new, gradually stronger research group in Elementary Particle Physics from 1960 at Stockholm University. Among his research papers one finds included, the discovery of neutral pions in cosmic rays (together with J. Hooper and D.T. King at Bristol University, England) and the first systematic study of antiproton annihilations (together with research groups at the University of California, Berkeley, USA). He has written a textbook in Nuclear Physics (Kärnfysik in Swedish) and numerous research papers, research reports and several popular articles in the fields of Nuclear Physics, Cosmic Radiation, Elementary Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Statistical Models, Science History and Science Policy. He was a member of the Nobel Committee for Physics in 1975-1988 and its chairman for two years. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Nobel Foundation in the 1980s. He has served on Swedish Research Councils, international research committees and the CERN Scientific Policy Committee, being its chairman for three years.
