The Future of Health

Nobel Week Dialogue

Anna Beck

Anna Beck is a Swedish para-cyclist and national team captain in the Swedish Paralympic Committee.

Anna Beck is national team captain in the Swedish Paralympic Committee. She has had a strong interest in sports from an early age but found it hard to truly excel. It wasn’t until she received her diagnosis of a disability and got involved in parasports that competing started to feel genuinely fun.

With the motto that anyone can achieve their goals if they work hard enough, she became the world’s best time trial cyclist. At the 2017 World Championships in South Africa, she won her first world championship gold medal.

In 2021, when Beck claimed two world championship gold medals and two silvers at the Tokyo Paralympics, she was nominated at Sweden’s prestigious “Idrottsgalan” in the category of Female Athlete of the Year.

Beck has been a driving force in the mission to have parasports recognised at the same level as “regular” sports. She ended her career with a gold at the first fully co-organised World Championships in Zurich. However, she also emphasises the importance of having fun, something she keeps close to her as she transitions into her role as national team coach.

Spotlight on diabetes

The discovery of insulin and subsequent breakthroughs by Nobel Prize laureates led to advancements in how we treat the chronic disease. Now, efforts are focused on tackling the unfolding diabetes “epidemic” and finding a cure that could relegate the disease to history.
