Motivation:De Jong was one of the foremost peace workers of his time. He was co-founder of the "Nederlandsche Anti-Oorlog-Raad", where he was member of the executive council. He was editor of the influental publication "Nouvelles de Hollande" and he published numerous works on peace. He initiated international study conferences at The Hague (1915) and Bern (1917), conferences aimed at formulating the principles for a lasting peace. In 1917 he resigned from his position in the Dutch Ministry of Justice in order to dedicate his time to the peace cause. He moved to Bern, where he administered the information office "Pax". Proponent of peace, arbitration and pacifism.
