Motivation:Sir Alexander Fleming, prof, London university, GB, was nominated for the discovery of penicillin, and William H. Florey, prof, Oxford University, GB, was nominated for the purification of penicillin and its introduction into therapy. André Gratia, prof, Liège University, BE, was nominated for his pioneer research on the biological role and practical application of the microbal antagonism. Nominators were dr P. van Pée, G. Leplat, dean, and colleagues of the Faculty of Medicine, Liège University, BE. Nomination was declared invalid by the Nobel Committee.
