Nobel Peace Prize laureates Dmitry Muratov and Tawakkol Karman will visit Stockholm in late September. They will speak at an international conference for teachers and will participate in separate conversations at the Nobel Prize Museum. The theme of these conversations is the growing threats to freedom of expression and democracy and what can reverse this trend. Their visits will take place in conjunction with the announcement of this year’s Nobel Prizes in early October.
Dmitry Muratov – Freedom of expression in focus
In 2021, Dmitry Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to safeguard freedom of expression. For decades, he has been editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, where he and his associates have conducted investigative journalism. Meet him in a conversation with journalist and author Ingrid Carlberg and philosopher and author Åsa Wikforss about freedom of expression, democracy and lasting peace.

The conversation with Dimitry Muratov is one of several activities aimed at drawing attention to efforts to promote democracy and freedom of expression. In May, the Nobel Foundation and the US National Academy of Sciences organised a three-day conference in Washington DC about disinformation and its damaging impact on trust in science and democracy. In March 2023, the Swedish Academy also hosted a conference about today’s threats to freedom of expression and democracy, entitled “Thought and Truth under Pressure”.
Tawakkol Karman − Determination and change
In 2011, Tawakkol Karman was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in democratising Yemen. She will participate in a conversation at the Nobel Prize Museum about courage, determination and how injustice against an individual is an assault on all of humanity. The conversation will be moderated by the Carin Klaesson of the Nobel Prize Museum.
