Health challenges to be discussed when Nobel Laureates meet in Berlin

21 October 2019

How can we ensure good healthcare and a healthy life for all? How is climate change affecting our health? Ands that will be explored during the Nobel Prize Dialogue on Friday 8 November in Berlin. Five Nobel Laureates will give talks and take part in panel discussions together with other experts and researchers.

The National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has joined forces with Nobel Media to organise the first Nobel Prize Dialogue held in Germany. The Nobel Prize Dialogue originated in Sweden, where it has been held since 2012 in the same week as the Nobel Prize awards ceremony. Since then it has been organised in many countries over the world. “Nobel Prize Dialogue provides a global platform for cutting-edge dialogue on issues of great importance for humanity.

At the event in Berlin, we look into the challenges we face within health. Health concerns us all, but to what extent are we responsible for our own health? And who’s responsible for health and well-being on a societal level? For the health of future generations? Those are some of the cross-sector questions we will tackle, together with Nobel Laureates, policy makers, leading scientists and an engaged audience”, says Laura Sprechmann, CEO of Nobel Media. Peter Agre (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2003), Harald zur Hausen (Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2008), Tomas Lindahl (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2015), Edvard Moser (Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2014) and Alvin Roth (Laureate in Economic Sciences 2012) will participate in the event. Kristie Ebi, the lead author of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) special report on warming of 1.5°C, will also speak along with some 15 panellists. The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

During the day, laureate Edvard Moser will be talking about dementia and ageing with Ursula Staudinger, professor of sociomedical sciences at Columbia University. The question of whether society can afford healthcare will be tackled by Michel Goldman, founder of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Innovation in Healthcare (I³h), pharmacologist Heyo Kroemer and laureate Alvin Roth. Laureate Peter Agre will shed light on health challenges in low- and middle-income countries in a conversation with Tolu Oni, public health physician scientist and urban epidemiologist at the University of Cambridge, and Tikki Pang, visiting professor at the National University of Singapore. A list of speakers is to be found at https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel-prize-dialogue/
