Nobel Laureates meet in Madrid to discuss the challenges of ageing

9 April 2019

The theme for the first Nobel Prize Dialogue in Madrid is ‘The Future of Ageing’. Nobel Laureates, key opinion leaders, policy makers, students and researchers will meet in Madrid on 22 May to discuss some of the most pressing scientific, economical and philosophical questions around ageing.

“Spain is a country with a long life expectancy. In that context, it will be particularly interesting to discuss the topic of ageing with Nobel Laureates and other experts. We have had a very fruitful cooperation with Ramón Areces Foundation, sharing an ambition to stimulate interest in science and gain further knowledge within fields of importance to our future,” says Laura Sprechmann, Deputy CEO of Nobel Media.

Raimundo Pérez-Hernández, director of the Ramón Areces Foundation says: “Ageing affects all parts of our lives, not only health, therefore the Nobel Prize Dialogue Madrid also will focus on the economics of ageing, as well as on intellectual aspects such as art, culture and the everyday life of older people. “

The Nobel Week Dialogue is a cross-disciplinary meeting aiming to deepen the dialogue between the scientific community and the rest of society. The meetings are free to attend and have been organised for several years all over the world.

During the conference the audience will listen to discussions ranging from key questions such as how long we will live in the future, to how long we can afford to live and how long we ought to live. Other panels will consider how education needs to change in an ageing society, the rights of older people and health-related aspects of living longer. A special focus will also be devoted to discussing diseases of ageing such as dementia and cancer and how science can contribute to solving urgent issues.

A pre-event will be hosted at Residencia de Estudiantes on 21 May with Economic Sciences Laureate Finn Kydland. University lectures will also be given on 23 May.

The Nobel Prize Dialogue in Madrid 2019 will be arranged by Nobel Media in cooperation with Ramón Areces Foundation with the kind support from Nobel International Partners 3M, ABB, Ericsson, Scania and Volvo Cars.
