Epidemics, mental health, medical breakthroughs and innovative ways to improve our well-being. This year’s Nobel Week Dialogue, which will take place on 9 December in Stockholm, will explore many important aspects of global health. On site will be Nobel Prize laureates, Olympians, scientists and entrepreneurs.
This year’s conference will feature three Nobel Prize laureates in physiology or medicine from previous years: Charles Rice, Michael Rosbash and Drew Weissman. In addition, Olga Tokarczuk, the 2018 laureate in literature, will be interviewed on stage.
In an interview prior to the event Olga Tokarczuk says:” I think literature is a great therapist. Not just because it distracts us from our current problems, from overstimulation and chaos, but above all because it broadens our consciousness. After every book we read we are greater, with a wider range, we understand and feel more.”
Part of the day’s programme will focus on the role that diet and nutrition play in our health. Nancy Clark, a renowned expert on sports nutrition, will converse with Carl Skau, chief operating officer at the United Nations World Food Programme. There will be conversations about reducing risk of epidemics and pandemics, climate and health, and antibiotic resistance. Two sports personalities with Olympic medals, cross-country skier Anna Jönsson Haag and paracyclist Anna Beck, will join to discuss physical and mental performance at the highest level.
One panel discussion will address the state of the world’s health, current threats and necessary solutions. The panellists will include Sania Nishtar from the global vaccine alliance Gavi and Jeremy Farrar, chief scientist at the World Health Organisation (WHO). Groundbreaking medical advances will also be highlighted, as well as how science and society can work together to improve the health of more people worldwide.
