Press release from Nobel Prize Outreach

Nobel Prize laureates talk about the importance of imagination at work

21 June 2022

On 7 July an exclusive conversation with two Nobel Prize laureates will be held in Madrid. They will be invited to talk about their attitudes towards diversity, curiosity and the importance of being able to use imagination in their work. The event is open for the public and media to attend.

Ardem Patapoutian (2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine) and Hartmut Michel (1988 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) will take part in the conversation to be held at Fundación Ramón Areces. Both laureates followed unexpected roads to research and the conversation will delve into their attitudes to diversity, curiosity, asking big questions, success and failure, to find out how they found their individual paths to the Nobel Prize. They will also talk about their approach to scientific exploration and the role that dreaming plays in their work.

“This session is about daring to imagine and explore. We encourage everyone, scientist or not, to dream big. Looking through the curiosity-driven lens of a scientist, I hope each one of us attending the session will get inspired to expand mental boundaries and learn new things,” says Laura Sprechmann, CEO of Nobel Prize Outreach.

Hartmut Michel will be present in Madrid. Ardem Patapoutian will join the conversation remotely. The host for the conversation will be Adam Smith, chief scientific officer at Nobel Prize Outreach, and presenter of the podcast ‘Nobel Prize Conversations’. Every year Adam Smith also has the happy task of interviewing all Nobel Prize laureates just after they have been announced. The event will also feature Elea Giménez Toledo, director of center for human and social sciences (CCHS) at Spanish National Research Council, and Eva Ortega-Paíno, biobank scientific director at Spanish National Research Centre (CNIO).

The event is organized by Nobel Prize Outreach in cooperation with Fundación Ramón Areces of Spain with the kind support from Nobel International Partners 3M, ABB, Capgemini, Ericsson and Scania. Both organizations have a long and successful collaboration highlighting and discussing important topics for the future together with invited Nobel Prize laureates and experts. Fundación Ramón Areces of Spain and Nobel Prize Outreach also cooperate around the podcast ‘Nobel Prize Conversation’.
