Press release from Nobel Prize Outreach

Nobel Prize laureates to inspire students in Brazil

30 March 2021

On 8 April, Nobel Prize laureates May-Britt Moser and Serge Haroche will take part in a digital event talking about their work as scientists, their lives and the value of science. The event is dedicated to inspiring students from all over Brazil to devote their career to science. The discussions during the session will focus on the value of science for society and draw attention to the importance of public policies based on scientific knowledge, especially during times of crisis. The online conversation is arranged by Nobel Prize Outreach and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

“We know from experience that the Nobel Prize and the achievements of the laureates are of great inspiration to young people all over the world. We are very pleased to be able to invite to this digital meeting between these two interesting laureates and students in Brazil”, says Laura Sprechmann, CEO of Nobel Prize Outreach.

“A discussion with two Nobel Prize laureates regarding the value of science, especially in a complex moment like the one we currently face, represents a unique opportunity to reflect on the role of science in the development of human civilization and in coping with the challenges that lie ahead. We must seek, supported by science, solutions that allow us to preserve lives and sustainably resume economic development, generating jobs, income, and social inclusion”, says Luiz Davidovich, president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

May-Britt Moser was one of three medicine laureates in 2014 awarded for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain. Serge Haroche shared the 2012 physics prize for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems.

The event will be hosted by Adam Smith, chief scientific officer for Nobel Prize Outreach. Luiz Davidovich, president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences will also join the conversation, together with Helena B. Nader, co-chair of the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences.

The digital event takes place on 8 April, 10:00-13:30 BRT. Students from Universities all over Brazil will be invited. The programme starts with an opening session with all speakers joining. It will be followed by two round tables with the laureates and 20 selected students for each round table. All sessions will be open for everyone to follow.

The online event is produced by Nobel Prize Outreach in partnership with the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and in collaboration with Instituto Serrapilheira. It also counts with the kind support from Nobel International Partners 3M, ABB, Ericsson, Scania and event partner SKF. The event is a pre-event to a larger Nobel Prize Dialogue that will take place in Brazil in 2022.
