Nobel Prize laureates visit Korea to discuss future learning

21 June 2023

Humans are facing existential challenges. On 24 September laureates and other experts will meet in Seoul, Korea to discuss how future generations can equip themselves to tackle these pressing questions – what do we need to know and how should we learn it to be able to build a better world? Students from high schools and universities, as well as science teachers, researchers and the general public, are invited to register for the Nobel Prize Dialogue. Registration opens today.

“With this event, we invite young citizens to take on the journey of life-long learning. It is an invitation to a dialogue, to a commitment. A commitment to stay curious and to ask questions, nurturing an attitude that drives change,” says Laura Sprechmann, CEO of Nobel Prize Outreach.

Prof. Ook Joon YOO, President of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), mentioned that “Due to COVID-19, AI, robots, and other factors, we have been experiencing radical changes in our lives over the past few years. However, our society and individuals have not learned how to cope with these challenges. Through Nobel Prize Dialogue Seoul 2023 under the theme of Future Learning, Exploring Science and Technology, we seek to find solutions together with Nobel Prize laureates and world-leading scientists, policy makers and thought leaders.”

Four Nobel Prize laureates will participate in Nobel Prize Dialogue Seoul: George Smoot, 2006 physics laureate; Konstantin Novoselov, 2010 physics laureate; Michael Levitt, 2013 chemistry laureate; and Hartmut Michel, 1988 chemistry laureate. Among other speakers are Anna D’Addio, Senior Policy Analyst, UNESCO; A. Lin Goodwin, Professor, Lynch School of Education and Human Development; and Jae Boong Choi, Professor, Sungkyunkwan University. Click here for all speakers.

The dialogue will address learning from different perspectives and start the day by talking about the value of learning, drivers for education and how to achieve equality in education. The second part of the day will examine technology and education, since technology is one of the factors that is changing both the practice and focus of education. Both the positive and negative aspects of technology and AI will also be highlighted at the meeting. The last part of the day will focus on the future of science and technology education.

The Nobel Prize Dialogue is an open, cross-disciplinary meeting bringing together a unique constellation of Nobel Prize laureates, world-leading scientists, policy makers and thought leaders to discuss global issues that affect us all.

Nobel Prize Dialogue Seoul 2023 is produced by Nobel Prize Outreach in cooperation with the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) with the kind support of Nobel International Partners 3M, ABB, Capgemini, EQT, H2 Green Steel and Scania, event partner Samsung and supporting organisations WISET and COFAC.

George Smoot and Michael Levitt will give one lecture each in connection with the Dialogue. The lectures will be held on 25 September for students in Seoul.
