Press release from Nobel Prize Outreach

Nobel Prize Series launches in India for long-term program

4 September 2016

Nobel Laureates to stimulate students’ creative thinking and engagement in science.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by Nobel Media and the Government of India (GOI), represented by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology for hosting Nobel Prize Series in India for five years.

Mattias Fyrenius, CEO Nobel Media:

We are thrilled to bring Nobel Prize Series to India as a part of our global outreach with the ambition of raising engagement in science, literature and peace in line with Alfred Nobel’s vision. This long term commitment enables us to create great content and inspire people not only in India, but around the world through our digital channels.

K. VijayRaghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India:

India’s bright students have a thirst for knowledge and its application to society. They are inspired by examples of excellence, but the opportunities for interacting with the best and the brightest are sadly far too little for a country of our size. The Nobel Prize Series will bring, through a major event and digital media, the world’s best scientists to every young girl and boy in India with an interest in science.

Nobel Prize Series is a unique programme combining a conference, lectures, roundtables, an exhibition and other meeting spaces. By bringing together Nobel Laureates, other experts and lifelong learners the programme aims to stimulate innovation and creative thinking.

The first Nobel Prize Series in India will be held in January 2017 in connection with the biennial summit “Vibrant Gujarat” held by the government of Gujarat. A trilateral Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Department of Biotechnology, Government of Gujarat and Nobel Media.

The three parties share a common wish to stimulate engagement in science – scientific discoveries have great impact on society and broaden our understanding of the universe. Nobel Laureates and their achievements are an endless source of inspiration and will be invited for discussions on the theme of Vibrant Gujarat “Science for Humankind” and “Science as the Engine for Economic Growth”.

Beside the conference and meeting events, such as lectures, roundtables and other activities in Gandhinagar, Delhi and Bangalore, Nobel Prize Series will feature a 5-week long exhibition on how the science underlying the Nobel Prize have impacted our lives.
