Press release from Nobel Prize Outreach

Nobel Week scientific conference will explore the future of life

19 October 2022 View in Swedish

Registration is now open for this year’s Nobel Week Dialogue, a day-long scientific conference in Stockholm on 9 December that will explore how life on earth may look in the future. Nobel Week Dialogue 2022 will feature an interdisciplinary array of Nobel Prize laureates, including Frances Arnold, Andrea Ghez, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Benjamin List, Paul Nurse and Didier Queloz.

The discussions during this year’s Nobel Week Dialogue will focus on key challenges and opportunities that will influence the future of humanity and of life on earth − everything from what life is and what it means to be human to whether there is life on other planets and how we can deal with both dystopian and utopian visions of the future.

“What could be more urgent than talking about our life on earth and what awaits us around the corner?” says Laura Sprechmann, CEO of Nobel Prize Outreach. “This year, we are especially pleased to have Nobel Prize laureates on-site in Stockholm who will inspire us to maintain a high level of ambition and lift our gaze in the conversations that will take place during the day.”

Participants in the panel discussions will examine such issues as how we can improve living standards, preserve biodiversity and harness new technologies. How can our societies cope with existential threats including war, pandemics and climate change? What do we hope for, what matters in life, and what does a better future look like? What scenarios can we expect, and how far can we actually peer into the future?

This annual scientific conference is one of the highlights of the Nobel Week. This year it will take place at the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre. The day will be free of charge, but registration is required and the sooner you register, the better your chances. The Nobel Week Dialogue is held in Stockholm every other year and in Gothenburg (Göteborg) every other year. Over the years that the conference has taken place, it has always been fully booked.

The prerequisites for life are also the theme of the Nobel Prize Museum’s ‘Life Eternal’ exhibition at Liljevalchs in Stockholm, which opened on 1 October 2022 and runs until 29 January 2023. Read more about it here: https://evigtliv.nobelprizemuseum.se/en/

About the Nobel Week Dialogue

The Nobel Week Dialogue is a yearly conference during the Nobel Week aimed at stimulating discussion at the highest level on a topical science-related theme by bringing together Nobel Prize laureates, world-leading scientists, thought leaders, policy makers and various interest groups for panel discussions and conversations. By building bridges between science and society, the all-day event is an opportunity to awaken curiosity and inspire new thinking.

The Nobel Week Dialogue is organised by Nobel Prize Outreach in collaboration with Carl Bennet AB, the City of Gothenburg, the Volvo Group and Region Västra Götaland.
