The life of a scientist – online event with Nobel Laureate Stefan Hell

10 November 2020

On 17 November Nobel Laureate Stefan Hell will take part in a digital Q&A on the topic of being a scientist. The session is organised to inspire students and young researchers to devote their career to science. The conversation is arranged by Nobel Prize Outreach and Korean Academy of Science and Technology, KAST.

In 2014 Stefan Hell shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. Adam Smith, chief scientific officer at Nobel Prize Outreach, will moderate the session with Stefan Hell, asking questions on the topic of being a scientist. The conversation will explore Stefan Hell’s experiences as a scientist, and the journey that led to his Nobel Prize. He will share advice about developing a scientific career and give examples on how science and society are strongly interconnected.

“I’ve always enjoyed doing challenging things and also challenging common wisdom. So, I think that’s something a scientist can do because a scientist works at a border, at the edge of science, at the edge of knowledge, and so there’s a lot of fun of reaching out and thinking about things that other people didn’t think about”, Stefan Hell explained in an interview following the announcement of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

For part of the discussion Hell will be joined by Jung-Hye Roe, President of National Research Foundation of Korea.

The webinar format means the audience will have the chance to submit questions via a chat function. This will allow the audience to guide the discussion in wide-ranging directions, tackling issues such as creativity, collaboration and dealing with failure.

The conversation will air 19.30 local time (Seoul) and last for an hour.

The online event with Stefan Hell is produced by Nobel Prize Outreach in partnership with Korean Academy of Science and Technology, KAST with the kind support from Nobel International Partners 3M, ABB, Ericsson and Scania and event partner Samsung.
