The Nobel Foundation manages the assets that Alfred Nobel left behind to finance the Nobel Prize and the task of selecting Nobel Laureates. Since 2011 these assets have grown from less than SEK 3 billion to above SEK 4 billion. As Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Ulrika Bergman will play a central role in the Nobel Foundation’s asset management.

Ulrika Bergman has served most recently as CIO for Global Equities at SEB Investment Management. She has headed a 10-person team at SEB – a Stockholm-based bank – which has managed SEK 170 billion worth of investments in a range of international equity and balanced mutual funds, employing modern financial and quantitative methods. She has worked at SEB since 2007 and has held her current position since 2012.

“We are pleased to be able to engage Ulrika Bergman in the management of the Nobel Foundation’s assets. She has the right expertise and experience for us,” says Lars Heikensten, Executive Director of the Nobel Foundation.

“It will be exciting and fun to work at an organisation like the Nobel Foundation, where asset management occurs with a perpetual time horizon and for the purpose of rewarding contributions for the greatest benefit to mankind. This is a sustainability perspective that is more topical today than ever. I view it as a challenge to bring it all the way into the management of the Foundation’s assets,” says Ulrika Bergman.

The CIO of the Nobel Foundation is in charge of continuously monitoring and evaluating the various assets of the Nobel Foundation and for developing proposals for allocation, investment strategy, financial instruments and choice of managers. These tasks are performed in close collaboration with the Executive Director of the Foundation and with the Investment Committee that makes the crucial investment decisions.

The Nobel Foundation’s current CIO, Gustav Karner, is leaving the Foundation after five years to assume the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Apoteket AB:s Pensionsstiftelse, a pension fund in the Swedish pharmaceutical sector. Ulrika Bergman will assume her position at the Nobel Foundation on May 29, 2017.
