Water to be discussed in Stockholm during Nobel Week

12 November 2018

On 9 December the Nobel Week Dialogue will take place. Under the slogan “every drop is precious” this year’s dialogue will be turning its attention to the topic of water. Nobel Laureates will be attending together with scientists, experts, key opinion leaders and policy makers. Registration for the general public and media will open today on 17 October.

“We chose to focus on the topic of water as it is crucial to our future and essential to the survival of humanity. We hope to get new insights by putting focus on the issue from several perspectives; from science and economics to culture and politics. I hope that the day will be inspiring, give the audience more knowledge and help us all to see how we can contribute to a more sustainable use of water,” says Mattias Fyrenius, CEO of Nobel Media.

Many questions will be raised during the day. How does humanity impact the ocean? Where does water get wasted? Can we change patterns of water use? You will, for example, be able to listen to Diva Amon who has participated in several deep-sea expeditions around the world and meet Maude Barlow who led the campaign to have water recognised as a human right by the UN. Also taking part in the dialogue is Julian Dowdeswell, a glaciologist, working on the form and flow of glaciers and ice caps and their response to climate change and Gary White, dedicated to empowering people in the developing world to gain access to safe water and sanitation.

With Sweden as its home base, the Nobel Week Dialogue has over the years become a global success with meetings in places like Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India. In 2019 dialogues will be arranged in Chile, Japan, Spain and Sweden.
