John Maxwell Coetzee est né en 1940 au Cap en Afrique du Sud. Il est d’ascendance à la fois allemande et anglaise. Ses parents l’envoyèrent dans une école anglaise et il grandit avec l’anglais comme première langue. Il élut domicile en Angleterre au début des années 60 où il travailla d’abord comme programmateur. Puis il suivit des études d’histoire de la littérature aux Etats-Unis et enseigna par la suite la littérature et l’anglais à la State University of New York à Buffalo jusqu’en 1983. Il obtint une chaire de professeur de littérature anglaise en 1984 à l’Université du Cap. Il s’expatria en 2002 en Australie où il est rattaché à l’Université d’Adelaïde.
Coetzee commença sa carrière de romancier en 1974 et acquit une renommée internationale en 1980 grâce au roman Waiting for the Barbarians (En attendant les barbares, 1982). Il reçut le Booker Prize anglais pour Life and Times of Michael K en 1983 (Michael K, sa vie, son temps, 1985).
Après la « modernisation » de Robinson Crusoë dans le roman Foe, 1986 (Foe, 1988), Coetzee repart en Afrique du Sud avec Age of iron, 1990 (L’âge de fer, 1992). En 1999, Coetzee fut le premier écrivain à recevoir une deuxième fois le Booker Prize, cette fois pour son roman Disgrace (Disgrace, 2001) où l’action, tout comme dans In the Heart of the Country, 1977 (Au cœur de ce pays, 1977), se déroule dans une ferme isolée d’Afrique du Sud.
Les idées et les comportements issus de l’apartheid, mais qui selon l’auteur peuvent se développer n’importe où, constituent un thème fondamental dans les romans de Coetzee. L’écrivain est également traducteur et il rédige des critiques littéraires pour, entre autres la New York Review of Books. Ses mémoires de littérature, publies dans des revues telles que Comparative Literature, Journal of Literary Semantics et Journal of Modern Literature, sont réunis dans des recueils d’essais : White Writing, 1988, Doubling the Point, 1992, Giving Offense : Essays on Censorship, 1996, et Stranger Shores : Essays 1986-1999, 2001.
Dans son dernier ouvrage Elizabeth Costello : Eight Lessons, 2003, Coetzee mele essai et fiction. Certaines parties, telles que What is Realism? et The Lives of Animals, ont été publiées dans d’autres livres.
