Kazuo Ishiguro nació el 8 noviembre den 1954 en Nagasaki, Japón. Su familia se mudó a Gran Bretaña cuando él tenía cinco años e Ishiguro no volvió a visitar su país natal hasta edad adulta. A finales de 1970 se licenció en inglés y filosofía en la Universidad de Kent, luego estudió escritura creativa en la Universidad de East Anglia.

Desde su debut con el libro A Pale View of Hills (1982; Pálida luz en las colinas 1988) Kazuo Ishiguro ha sido escritor a tiempo completo. Tanto su primera novela como la siguiente An Artist of the Floating World (1986; Un artista del mundo flotante 1989) se desarrollan en Nagasaki pocos años después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Ya en esas obras encontramos los temas que normalmente se relacionan con Ishiguro: la memoria, el tiempo y el autoengaño. Esto se puede ver especialmente en su tercera y más famosa novela, The Remains of the Day (1989; Los restos del día 1991), de la que se hizo una película con Anthony Hopkins en el papel del leal y concienzudo mayordomo Stevens.

Sus obras estan marcadas por una contención en el idioma independiente del dramatismo de los hechos relatados. Paralelamente sus novelas posteriores contienen una mayor cantidad de elementos fantásticos. Con la obra distópica Never Let Me Go (2005; Nunca me abandones 2005) introdujo Ishiguro una fria corriente subyacente de ciencia ficción en su literatura. En esta obra, como en muchas otras, la música tiene una gran importancia. Un buen ejemplo es la colección de relatos Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall (2009; Nocturnos : cinco historias de música y crepúsculo 2010), donde la música es un elemento recurrente en la descripción de las relaciones amorosas de los personajes. En su última novela The Buried Giant (2015; El gigante enterrado 2016) una pareja de ancianos viaja a través de un paisaje inglés arcaico con la esperanza de reencontrarse con su hijo adulto, al que no han visto desde hace muchos años. De entre las oleadas de brumas surge una interacción entre la memoria y el olvido, la historia y la contemporaneidad, la fantasia y la realidad. Aparte de sus ocho libros Ishiguro ha escrito también guiones para cine y televisión y compuesto música.
