As a historian, Sejersted has published numerous works, primarily on modern Norwegian history. He was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in 1982-1999, its chairman from 1991.
Francis Sejersted got his M.A.in history in 1971. He became a reader at the University of Oslo in 1971 and professor in social and economic history from 1973. From 1983 until 1988, he was chairman of Forskningspolitisk Råd, a public council that advised the government on Norwegian research. Sejersted was director of the Center for Technology and Human Values at the University of Oslo in1988-1998 and was chairman of the publicly appointed Commission of Free Speech in 1996-1999.
