Kåre Gulbrand Kristiansen entered NSB, the Norwegian State Railway Company in 1941 and became Railway Director from 1968. He was chairman of the youth organisation of the Christian People’s Party in 1953-1954, deputy chairman of the party 1961-1975, and chairman in 1975-1977 and again in 1979-1983.

Kristiansen was a member of the Storting in 1973-1977 and 1981-1989 and Vice President of the Odelsting in 1986-1989. He was State Secretary in the Ministry of Social Affairs in 1965 and Minister of Petroleum and Energy in 1983-1986.

Kristiansen was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 1991. In 1994 he resigned in protest against the award to Arafat, Rabin and Peres.
