Nils Langhelle got his M.A. in 1934. He was a member of the city council of Bergen in the period in 1937-1947 and chairman of the local branch of the Labour Party in 1935-1945 and from 1960.

Langhelle was a member of the Storting in 1950-1965, its President in 1958-1965 and Vice-President in 1965-1967. He was Cabinet Minister in 1945-55 (Labour, Communication, Defence, and Trade). He was a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee 1964-1967, its chairman in 1967.
